1970 Pontiac GTO Hardtop
For consignment, a 1970 Pontiac GTO with a title verified 70,687 actual miles with a numbers matching transmission, a date-correct 400ci V8, PHS documentation, the build sheet copy, and evidence of this car appearing in magazines in 2000 and 2012.
Exterior
Two stage sinister black paint looks positively wet on this car with a color Pontiac calls Starlight Black. It's tastefully accented by red bits including the GTO decals, the grille emblem, and the PMD center caps on the 15-inch Pontiac Rally II wheels. There's also a bit of red on the face of the hood tach which itself represents an epic design feature and is accompanied by dual nostrils on the hood. Metallic accents include headlight bezels, rocker panel trim, window trim, side mirrors, and the rear bumper. That bumper houses elongated tail lights over dual twin tips. The black vinyl top, as with the metal and paint on the car, is in excellent condition and in profile, the car has a perfect stance, and curves nicely obscured by its inky black jacket. We could find no glaring imperfections on the exterior of the car.
Interior
Diagonal pleats and silver trim pieces are formed to create clean door panels that house electric window switches and a GTO badge. The pleated design, this time straight, appears on the black vinyl seats, with buckets up front and bench in the back and it looks like it jumped off a sales brochure, clean and pristine. The steering wheel will be familiar to Trans Am owners as well, this one wrapped in black foam and wearing the Pontiac arrowhead on the horn cap. The dash is beautifully coated in a faux wood veneer and housing three inset gauges above the turned metal trim line that stretches to the center of the dash where it holds an AM/FM radio under vent controls. A period 8 track player is mounted below the dash and the center console with matching faux wood houses a wood knobbed shifter with PMD button on top, all in great condition. Black loop carpet is protected by Pontiac rubber mats and the headliner is high and tight, flanked by clipped shoulder belts. The trunk is lined with a fitted rubber mat and contains a covered spare and fire extinguisher.
Drivetrain
Under the epic hood we find a clean 400ci L67 V8 rated at 300 horsepower and topped by a 4-barrel carburetor, all backed by the numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Power goes pony car style to the rear wheels, a 10-bolt rear with 3.90 gears and Safe-T-Track. Power brakes are a welcome component with discs in front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Kind of what we expected after seeing the top, although you never know. Super clean underneath with minimal surface rust reserved for some brake parts, no extra oil or grease anywhere, and only slight signs of road dust. Beyond that, essentially factory fresh. The dual exhaust travels through FlowMaster mufflers on their way to chrome splitters out the back. The independent front suspension is equipped with coil springs and the rear has a 4 link and coil springs.
Drive-Ability
The 400 fires right up after a pump of the gas and rumbles onto the test loop without complaint. Good acceleration is met with fine tracking, nice handling, and spot on braking. This well sorted car has the added benefit of functioning lights, horn, and gauges on top of a fine running motor. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If I had bell bottoms and a leather fringe vest on, I might be able to convince onlookers that it's actually 1970 and not 2024. That's how clean this car appears. Perhaps the blinding clear coat shine would give it away, but all else points to a car that is still in its first year of life. Classic Auto Mall is the place to go if you're in the market for a GTO and this one is definitely worthy of your consideration. Spin the roulette wheel and we're hoping you land on black!
