What is Spec Miata Racing?
The Mazda MX-5 Miata, a sports car debuted by Mazda in 1989, is a classic roadster that harkens back to iconic British sports cars of the 1950s and 60s like the MGA, Triumph Spitfire and Austin-Healey 100. While not a speedster--the 4 cylinder engine nixes that definition--the Miata has clean, classic lines, a tight turning radius and plenty of style. Due to the Miata’s popularity, plus the Mazda marque’s general commitment to road and track racing of all sorts, and the affordability of buying a used Miata as a weekend racer, the Spec Miata road racing class has risen through the ranks to become the most popular type of club racing in America.
Spec, or specialized, racing is a popular division among collectors and weekend enthusisasts. To participate in Spec Miata, you need a First or Second Gen (1990-1993 1600cc and 1994-2005 1800cc) Miatas. The other required modifications are “specific Bilstein adjustable shocks in conjunction with Eibach springs and sway bars,” according to the NASA.
